“You Can’t Eat Only Vegetables Every Day”… A Man’s Realistic Concern Before Marriage

During the dating period before marriage, most things can be understood. You meet once a week, eat out from time to time, see only each other’s good sides, and then part ways.

But marriage is different. You sleep together every day, wake up together, and sit at the same table for meals. From that point on, living habits begin to show.

“Representative Lee, the woman you introduced to me is great in every way, but one thing bothers me.”

He opened his mouth carefully.

“What seems to be the problem?”

“She is pretty, kind, and we get along well. I even wondered if this is what fate feels like.”

But then the man’s voice suddenly became heavier.

“There is just one thing.”

“What is it?”

“Our eating preferences are too different.”

At first, I wondered whether that could really be such a big problem. But after hearing the story, I realized their eating habits were truly different.

The woman liked vegetables. She was not a vegetarian, but almost close to one. She disliked meat. The man was the exact opposite. He loved meat. He was the type who felt energized only after eating meat.

The man said,

“When we first started dating, it didn’t matter which restaurant we went to. But the more often we meet, the more the choice of restaurant and menu starts to bother me. I try to adjust to her as much as possible, but I can’t eat only vegetables every day.”

He had met a woman he liked, but one issue—food—was bothering him.

When dating, each person can simply eat what they like. But once married, they sit at the same table every day. Eating is a part of life that repeats for a lifetime.

I told him,

“Don’t look only at eating habits. Write down the whole relationship between the two of you.”

Appearance. Personality. Conversation. Family atmosphere. Living habits. Sexual compatibility. Comfort when together. And eating preferences.

“Are there enough good things in the other areas to offset the difference in eating habits?”

He thought for a moment.

“There are many.”

“Then you should give it a try. If you truly like each other, at first you may endure and adjust, and later you may slowly become more alike.”

After a pause, I added,

“On the other hand, if there is nothing particularly strong in the other areas and even eating habits are extremely different, it will not be easy. In that case, there is no reason to force it.”

The man thought again.

He liked the woman. That was why he was thinking so much. If he did not like her, he could simply end things because their eating preferences were different. But because he liked her, every little thing became a concern.

I asked him,

“Are you going to look for another woman whose eating preferences match yours too?”

After a brief silence, he said,

“Well, not exactly.”

When it comes to finding a spouse, all kinds of unexpected things can become an issue.

Lastly, for couples with this kind of difference in eating preferences, choosing buffet restaurants when eating out is often a good idea.
