The way people break up how/where, different by era … these days smartphones

When it comes to setting up men and women, it seems there are more misses than hits. Sometimes, you just don’t click right from the start.

Other times, things fall apart along the way, even at the point of almost getting married.

Take Ms.A, a woman in her mid-thirties, who recently broke up with her boyfriend of 3 years.

Over the past few months, the frequency of their dates had reduced, and they weren’t communicating as much as they used to. Then a few days ago, her boyfriend sent her a text message saying, “Continuing to see each other seems meaningless. We should break up,” and then he blocked her contact. While Ms.A wasn’t surprised by the breakup itself, she felt the way he broke it off was rude, leaving a sour taste in her mouth.

The way couples break up seems to evolve with the times.

Back in the 90s, if someone wanted to break up, they’d simply stop answering phone calls, a clear sign of rejection. Since cell phones weren’t around, landlines were pretty much the only way to get in touch. If calls became less frequent or went unanswered, you’d get the hint loud and clear.

By the 2000s, with the internet becoming widespread, email became a popular way to communicate. It also became a common way to break up.
Nowadays, a lot of breakups are happening via social media. People block their significant others on social media or unilaterally deliver their decision to split.

It turns out this trend is more common than one would think these days.
Couple.net, a global matchmaking platform, conducted a survey among 600 members (300 men and women each) about where they broke up with their recent partner.

The survey revealed that 36.7% broke up through smartphones, using social media or phone calls.
Following that were cafes or bars (33.5%) and then right in front of their house (15.5%).
