Matchings between men and women start with introductions from the manager.
The manager describes various traits including those that aren’t ranked such as religion, age, residence, and values, and those that are ranked such as education, occupation, income, and parental
background. They may also describe an individual’s appearance and sometimes show photos.
20 years ago, managers directly explained profiles, but nowadays, you can see recommended profiles on a site. Sometimes, the profiles even contain videos or audio files.
After considering all the information available and viewing various profiles a comprehensive decision is made to meet a person.
If both parties agree to meet, contacts are exchanged and a meeting is arranged.
Individuals with favorable profiles tend to have a high acceptance rate at the recommendation phase. However, those lacking physical appeal tend to have a lower acceptance rate.
While not as much as men, women also pay attention to appearance.
Height is also a significant factor where if it falls below a certain standard, some won’t even consider meeting the person.
For instance, in his mid-30s, Mr. A holds a Ph.D. from a prestigious university in the U.S., works for a global corporation, and earns a high salary. He has all the good qualities a woman would want, except for being a bit short. Most women who initially like Mr. A’s profile end up rejecting him upon discovering his height.
Suggestions have been made to introduce Mr. A with a slightly taller height in his profile and then explain the situation once a meeting is arranged, but Mr. A prefers to present himself as he is.
After facing continuous rejections and struggles in dating, Mr. A was advised to participate in a speed dating event, where multiple potential partners are introduced in one setting. Due to the likelihood of meeting compatible individuals, the chances of forming a relationship are higher.
In speed dating, participants see each other’s faces and engage in conversations, allowing them to see a potential partner without any preconceived notions.
Among the men, Mr. A was very popular at the event. With his bright demeanor and knack for leading conversations, 3 out of 10 women expressed interest in arranging a second date.
Eventually, Mr. A married one of those women.
Height is one aspect where biases based on profiles may change when actual meetings take place.
Through the global matching platform Couple.net, which has helped over 49,000 couples since 1991, we analyzed 136 men who were successful in marriage despite being short in height.
According to the results, several characteristics stood out. 41% of the men had a cheerful demeanor, 36% had an amiable personality, and 11% had a good sense of humor.
